Hello~ I'm Mia, a member of the group 'GET IT BEAUTY'. My work is to introduce Iranian beauty. In the last posting, I realized that inner beauty is more important than the outward appearance. So, today I will talk about Iranian inner beauty by Iranian language!
Picture
There is a 'Taarof' culture in Iran. For example, if you choose something in an Iranian market and then you are about to pay the price, the clerk will say 'Qabele nadare!' It means 'this is not valuable', and to the liberal translation, 'No, it's fine.' Even there are Iranian clerks who wave their hand or push customers' back to make the customers go home not paying the price. This is 'Taarof' culture. I think It is not commonsense because Iranian culture is unfamiliar for me. If you choose the goods in a Korean market and you try to pay the price, the clerk will say 'It is ~ won, Thank you, or Good bye.'

However, Taarof is a Iranian native culture that symbolizes respecting other people. 'Qabele nadare!' expresses modesty by the words and actions that mean the goods or the service is not valuable compared with the customers. It is an expression that respect to others enough to feel embarrassment. Iranian people use the expression all the incident in which money is moved.
If you meet the Taarof in Iran, you could accept the expression to 'welcome' in English and then pay the money. Because it is the only culture, you shouldn't accept the letter as it is and go home not paying the price. I think foreigners can be confused how much is a Taarof and how much is a truth.
Picture
In Korea, there is a similar culture. For instance, if your relatives give pocket money in Lunar New Year's Day, you had better get the money after once refusal. When I was a young, I got the pocket money at once and then my parents scolded me because it was discourteous in Korea. In that situation, you only need to say 'No, thanks, you need not give that money.' But the relatives will try to give the money for you continuously! Then, you can receive the pocket money feeling gratitude. I think this Korean culture that care for other people is similar to a Taarof in Iran.

It is a good inner beauty that people has consideration for others. Of course you can be confused at first time, this culture means the people is accustomed to be kind in everyday life! They have good manner!

Today is the last day of the posting about Iranian beauty. I have learnd lots of things so far and I think you too. If I go to Iran someday, I want to feel both Iranian outward beauty and inner beauty! Thank you for reading my postings!

Hello! I'm Mia, a member of the group 'GET IT BEAUTY'. I'm taking charge of introduce Iranian beauty, While I read books to find Iranian information, I got an interesting content about Iranian cosmetic surgery. So, today I'll explain Iranian COSMETIC SURGERY! There are lots of people who have cosmetic surgery in Korea, what was worse, some Koreans say if they had plenty of money, they would visit plastic surgeons immediately. Like this, women has instinct for the pursuit of beauty. I wonder why the boom in plastic surgery is happening in Iran because I think they have well-defined features like big eyes, thick eyebrows, etc. What kind of cosmetic surgery Iranian people have?
Picture
Especially, it is fashion to have a nose job in Iran. In a year, more than 200,000 Iranian women have a nose job and people in Iran are at least seven times as likely as those in U.S.A to have it. Iranian women usually reduce the nose size in order to make a sharp nose like Western beauties seen in Hollywood movies and satellite TV. The charges for an operation is very expensive to such an extent as to exceed half of annual income of an ordinary office worker. What's more, lots of Iranian who had a nose job face with plenty of problems like respiratory hazards, pains, nasal congestion because of a wrong operation by unlicensed physicians. Nevertheless the line of waiting a cosmetic surgery doesn't get shorter. Having a nose job in Iran signifies a social rank and is recognized a fashion, therefore, some people apply a sticking in their nose as they had a plastic surgery.

Picture
Why do Iranian women want to have a nose job? Some people argue that this social phenomenon is happen because of their traditional garment, a chador. If they wear a chador, their bodies are concealed except their faces, so, they want to show off their beauty by exposed faces. And others think it is happen because of the Iranian government that doesn't encourage social leisure . As a result, young Iranian people who don't know what to do in their spare time dream to imitate the Hollywood stars' appearance seen on TV. In other words, it is a leisure to have a nose job for the upper-middle classes.

Picture
It is really interesting that Iranian women reduce their nose sizes in comparison with Korean women who make their nose high. On reflection, it is very heart-stricken that lots of people in world make a great effort to imitate a westernized standard of beauty. I'm regrettable cultural toadyism is applicable even FACE. In my opinion, people in world should have a pride and confidence of their nation in order to think that an innate appearance is beautiful.

I also realized that women's instinct for pursuit of beauty is everywhere the same. But in my opinion, we should not forget inner beauty is more important than the outward appearance!!!

Our group's topic is the beauty of each nation. Especially, I choose one nation, Iran, and I'm going to introduce Iran's beauty! Last time, I posted a chador that is worn by Iranian women when they go out. Therefore, I want to explain what Iranian men have on when they go outside.
Picture
First of all, Iranian clerics wear a turban which looks like a hat. In other Muslim countries, ordinary people are also favorite to wear a turban. People have on a turban folding their heads by the thin cloth that is usually 5~10 meters long and 25 centimeters wide.
To start with, It was used to keep the heat and sandstorm away from Iranian men in the desert. However, it serves as a symbol of people's status in Iran. For instance, the clerics of high rank can wear a blue turban and the successors of Mohanmmed can have a black turban on. Especially, registered clerics were able to wear a turban when the Reza Shah Pahlavi King ruled Iran in early 1900s. If people who didn't have a licence worn a turban, they was beaten or dragged to prison.

Picture

If so, what kind of clothes do ordinary Iranian men not clerics put on? They surprisingly wear clothes of west! It means they go outside wearing a T-shirt and pants. They relatively have free clothes on compared Iranian women who wear a chador when they go out, of course, it doesn't admit of too short pants and tight fitting clothes.  Anyway, Iranian men can express their individuality of appearance more easily.

Picture

By extension, they give variety to their hairstyle. But Iranian government announces its plan to prohibit men's decadent hairstyle of west. It is banned to tie their hair back and make it stand with gel. The government says the strange hairstyle is prohibited grounds for the Islamic law, Muslim culture and so on.

In Korea, the western clothes and hairstyle completely pervade, so, ordinary people's fashion makes no difference with America or Europe. However, Iran doesn't perfectly accept to western style. Iranian even think that the necktie is a symbol of decadent west. In my opinion, it can be one reason of this case that Iran and U. S. A don't get along well over the nuclear weapon.
I hit upon the ruling period of regent Heungseon in Korea when I think of Iran. Regent Heungseon didn't like western countries, what was worse, he refused to trade with those. It looks like that Iran doesn't like west, of course not denying trade with other countries.
I think it isn't necessary to emphasize its own culture too much to such an extent as to restrict freedom of people's liberty. Besides, it is not good to have a cultural toadyism. I think it is important to harmonize between tradition and west culture in order to live better lives. I hope to have this nice balance in Korea and Iran all together from now on.

Hello! Thank you for clicking this page, 'Mia' :) Before my real subject of the post begin, I want to explain my group and group's theme. First of all, my group's name is 'Get it Beauty'. This name was created based on the TV program 'Get it Beauty', the popular TV program that is famous for introducing good cosmetics, clothes, hairstyles, etc. Therefore, we are going to introduce these topics. Concretely, we choice one area for each person and explain the area's beauty.
Especially, I picked Middle East area! yeah!! :) I have been to UK for this summer vacation and I have seen people who have worn a chador. Since I've been very impressed by the people's clothes, I picked the Middle East area, especially Iran, whose women mostly wear a chador.
Picture

Do you know a CHADOR? A chador is a kind of long cape which covers Muslim women's hair and body. At first, I thought a chador is too monotonous to wear because it is only black color and no pattern. However I could find lots of chadors by searching on the internet. There are black chadors that are made of stripe woolen fabrics, white chadors with polka dots and so on.  Also, if you look carefully, you can see white patterns around edge of the chador! It can be fashion in Iran.

Have you ever wondered why Iran women wear chador? Firstly, it was necessary to protect their skin from ultraviolet light. But by prevailing Islamism in Iran, chador changed to the women's essential garment. Read the following passage.
The Holy Qur'an tells us: "And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty."  (24:31)
This passage says Muslim women have to wear a veil! Surprisingly, chador is a symbol of gender equality in Islamic world.  According to Islam, Men are simulated by sight unlike women and, these men experience a sexual desire when they see beautiful appearance of women. Therefore, wearing a chador means not being tied down men's sight and being respected by dressing modestly.

When I firstly saw a woman wearing a chador, I thought it is irrational to wear it only for women. Especially, Iran have enacted a strict law, wearing a veil not only for its nationals but foreign women. In my first opinion, it is pretty conservative thought and it is troublesome to cover their body by putting on the veil whenever they go out. But, it is a just problem in my culture's point of view. It resulted from misunderstanding of Islamic religious values. Thanks to this blog entry, I'm able to realize that chador is a idea of protecting the women, not restricting them. From now on, I decide to consider cultural diversity when I come across new cultures!!!
